Outgoing President’s Message

Thank you for a wonderful year! Personally, I’ve had a great time working with you.

I think we’ve achieved my initial goal of slowing down to quilt. We’ve had two Sewing Saturdays, National Quilting Day, several classes, a bus trip to IQA’s show in Chicago, and used September’s meeting as a work session. We’ve donated hundreds of quilts to Heartwarmers, to the victims of Katrina and the Wisconsin tornadoes, to our National Guard soldiers in Iraq, to Haven House and other local charities.

We have at least eight new small groups and many new members. We’ve had some great speakers and classes.  We’ve done more communicating via e-mail. Very soon you can get updates on our new website. All the while, we kept on making quilts.

I hope you have enjoyed this past year as much as I have.  Now we look forward to our 2007 quilt show.  Please welcome Lynn Richardson as your new President.

Mary Simon Dunn

Past President 2005-6

Incoming President’s Message

Dear Quilters,

Quilting always presents us with new challenges, whether it is trying to choose the perfect colors for a new project or completing an old one by deciding how to quilt it.  My newest challenge is to serve as your president.  And the challenge to all of you is to finish those beautiful works of art to display in the 2007 quilt show!

I want to personally thank the outgoing Board of Directors and, especially, Mary Dunn for her friendship and guidance as I've been president-in-training.  I hope to get to know more of you as we go through this year.  We have so much talent in this guild.  If you have any ideas or suggestions, please let me know.  Together, we can make this the best year yet!

Lynn Richardson

President, 2006-2007

Details of the monthly financial statement and the show report available at the vice-president's table and on request from treasurer. The budget will also be available upon completion. Now is the time to plan for next year's budget.  Anyone thinking of asking for some funding for a project for 2006-2007 should contact a board member to be sure their request is considered.

We Have a Quilt Show Chair!!

Gayle Cain is a long-time member and a very skilled quilter.

Organizational meetings are coming up to get our 2007 show started. A formal date of the show cannot be set until we meet with the school in late August 2006, but much work must be done in the meantime.

A CCQG quilt show is a major effort that requires the participation of every member before, during and after the show, itself.

Keep working on your quilts, so that your own handiwork will be ready for the show.

CCQG Quilt Exhibit at Hospice of Lansing

Daisy DeHaven’s daughter, Dusty, the Communications Director for the HOSPICE OF LANSING, asked Daisy if she would hang a quilt exhibit in the public areas of their executive offices. In early March, Daisy measured the space, tracked down and  purchased the necessary rods. She emailed members of three of her small groups--Charm & Daughters, The Six Pack, and Ruth's Block Exchange--asking for members to loan some of their quilts for the exhibit. On Tuesday and Wednesday, April 11 and 12, with the help of Marilyn Palmer (The Six Pack) and Jan Gagliano (Charm/Daughters and BE), Daisy and Dusty hung eight full-to-queen size quilts, eight large and 11 smaller wall quilts.

Hospice will announce an Open House soon to view the quilts. This will be a rotating exhibit, and Daisy may be coming to some of you for quilts for a future exhibit! Hospice of Lansing is located at 6035 Executive Drive, Lansing and is not affiliated with any local hospital.

Cindy Mielock submitted the following heartwarming story:

While selling raffle tickets for the Habitat for Humanity Lansing raffle quilt at the MSU Pavilion Home Show in March, a man, wearing a sweatshirt with the words "Navy" written across it, walked slowly by the booth as I and a fellow board member tried to get people to stop and buy raffle tickets. The man looked at the quilt and seemed to focus right on it but he kept going. After he passed our booth, he stopped, turned around, came back to our booth and said he wanted to buy a ticket on the quilt. He said that when he returned from Iraq, apparently injured, he had received a quilt from a group of quilters. This quilt may have been one of the many quilts made by CCQG for the returning military personnel. He said it really touched him that someone would make him a quilt and so he thought it appropriate that he buy a raffle ticket for the quilt we made. He also said that when he finished with his rehabilitation he wanted to help build Habitat homes. I really had to fight back tears after he left our booth.

Fran Mort is looking for Spiderman fabric. If you have some, or know where to find some, please contact her.

Linda Wells, our incoming Vice President, took photos of the Challenge quilts at our March meeting. To see them, contact Linda for information. We hope to get the names with the photos soon.

ATTENTION QUILT PROFESSIONALS

If you have found a way to make money with something quilt-related, and would be willing to share your experience with our membership, please contact Inge Bommarito (Assistant Program Chair). She is planning a program to feature our professional members. So if you are an author, teacher, long-arm quilter, hand quilter, designer, retailer, etc., and would be willing to participate, contact Inge.

Judith Green says a big "thank you" to all those guild members who so graciously sent her pieces of fabric to cheer her up during her recent illness, as well as those that sent her get-well wishes via email. She sincerely appreciates these kind and gentle thoughts and gestures.

Habitat for Humanity Lansing Thanks CCQG!!

On behalf of Habitat for Humanity Lansing and its Board of Directors, we extend a big Thank You to Jean Harrison and Florence Vogt for generously making and providing beautiful quilts to our new Habitat homeowners for the past few years. Your thoughtfulness and devotion is overwhelming.

Thank you also to Gail Drayton and her small group of quilters that includes Nancy Cole, Jane Roehm, Pat Smith, Carmen Gorsline, Nelda Orr, Patti Phillips, Tena Schmitt and Virginia Martin for donating the beautiful quilt for our new Habitat homeowners on Chestnut Street.

We present these gift quilts to the families during our home dedication ceremony and they are warmly received and greatly appreciated. Habitat for Humanity Lansing recognizes all the efforts of the Capital City Quilt Guild members not only in providing gift quilts to our homeowners but in making the beautiful raffle quilts for the past several years. The raffle quilts help us raise funds to increase affordable housing and eliminate substandard housing in the Lansing area.

Nearly 100 Acquire “A Taste of Color” for National Quilting Day

Saturday, March 18, CCQG members and guests attended the Holt Presbyterian Church for National Quilting Day 2006. The theme for the day was “A Taste of Color” and participants were shown many exciting flavors and designs in classes, food and decorations. The array of delicious treats for feasting throughout the day was wide-ranging and members provided 3 carts of food and $10 in donations for the Holt Food bank.

The Blotto contest yielded a good crop of 57 participants and 6 lucky winners were Joyce Bahr, Carole Capriotti, Carol Holm, Minda Schneider, Irene Stewart and Sophie Wood. The variety of patterns and the creative ways quilters used the 8-inch fabric provided was in itself a show!

The sessions were well attended and offered an assorted menu for all who wanted to learn more. Fran Mort taught two-block techniques during the morning. The Amazing Block and Dimensional Flying Geese both won rave reviews and Fran’s kits were available for a $1 donation to the Humane Society. Rosemary Nester discussed color concepts and showed examples using the color wheel when picking fabric. Pat Johnston did a wonderful job with fabric dyeing and there was such interest for continuing in this realm, a new small group is being formed.  (Contact Coreen Strzalka for information). Pam Henrys of Everlasting Stitches presented a wooly project to create and furnished a vendor table, in addition to offering a special promotion at her Holt store. Thanks to all our presenters for an imaginative array of ideas.

National Quilting Day provides a fun day for us to gather for sewing, learning and fellowship. Without the special help of the volunteers for the day, however, it could never ripen and bloom. On behalf of Rosemary Nester and Susan Lilly, NQD co-chairs, kudos to the creative volunteers who made the day festive and fun and thanks to members who came and participated in the day.

An exceptional thanks to Jan Babcock for her help coordinating with the Church and to members of the Coordinating Committee: Pam Allen, Sue Ann Cole, Jean Kaufmann, Susan Merkle, Fran Mort and Janet Scott for their willingness to take a leadership role. Special contributors in the day’s events included: Pat Johnston, Judith Green, Nancy Ballard, Julie Larson, Florence Vogt, Janet Keesler, Eileen Giola, Marilyn Dykman, Mary McCulloch, Betty Stevenson, Jo Lange and Mary Dunn. See you next year!  Happy Coloring!!

2007 Raffle Quilt

Dorothy Jones has again agreed to organize the raffle quilt this year. Bev Wilkinson will be the ticket and money manager of the Raffle.

After much discussion, we have decided on a quilt that will alternate 9-patch blocks with flower blocks.  The individual squares are to be 3” finished, making a 9 ½” unfinished block. Please use 4 light squares and 5 medium squares in the 9-patch blocks. Sort of a dark medium would be good, but Dorothy does not want darks that will overwhelm the flowers.

The flower blocks, also to be 9 ½” unfinished, can be either pieced or appliquéd on an off-white background.  Dorothy is looking for a wide variety of flowers, so she did not choose a pattern. If you cannot find a flower pattern, contact her and she will provide a pattern for you.

Please don’t all decide to do the 9-patch block.  We will need equal numbers of each. Dorothy would like the unfinished blocks by September 1 which will take pressure off of her to put the quilt together and quilt it.

For the last quilt, having a variety of prints on the backs of the blocks produced an interesting back, so if you have some 10” pieces you are willing to donate, Dorothy will use them for the back!

Is this YOUR QUILT?

I received the following letter addressed to the Guild:

I’m writing you in the hope that your members may be able to help me return a quilt to its proper owners. A friend of mine left a quilt at my house several years ago, which he acquired when he bought an old house on Gier Street in Lansing.

The quilt is more like a duvet cover (no batting inside) but has been sewed shut. It is in need of some minor repairs and a good cleaning. I have been reluctant to wash it, as I do not know how old it is.

The women who created it embroidered their names on it: Mary R R Johnson, Bev Foote, Rheba Nickerson, Phoebe K, Della Lipscomb, Agnes L P (or possibly D), Elizabeth.

Because of the names on it, I feel that it may be a family heirloom that should be returned to someone for whom it would have meaning–perhaps one of the women or their descendents. I would really appreciate any help you could provide with finding this quilt’s rightful place. If you need any other information, please let me know. Thank you.

Sincerely

Amy L Renaud

A BIG THANK YOU to all members for their generous support of the Heartwarmers Project. We collected 47 quilts at the March meeting. Carolyn Solomon took some of them to the Pediatric floor at Sparrow Hospital and two of the nurses took a couple of the quilts for kids who were then hospitalized. All of the beautiful quilts are greatly appreciated by the nursing staff of Pediatrics and Pediatric Intensive Care. Carolyn always hears oohs and aahs when she delivers the quilts.

We will be collecting quilts as a guild again in September, but Carolyn is happy to take any quilts made before that, if you would rather not hold onto them until our bi-annual collection time.  Keep up all of your Heartfelt good work!
